Empower Teens United Business Workshop: Discovering Careers That Build Businesses.
Students learn best when they can collaborate, ask questions, and apply ideas in real-world settings.
Empower Teens United Business Workshop: Discovering Careers That Build Businesses, where students worked together to explore career paths, learn from professionals, and design meaningful business concepts with the guidance of mentors. We brought students and professionals together for an evening of learning, collaboration, and leadership development.
At Empower Teens United, we believe in creating an ecosystem where students can explore educational and career opportunities early, connect with real-world professionals, and build confidence through hands-on experiences. This workshop was a powerful example of that mission in action.
Learning From Leaders Through Real-World Career Exploration
The Business Workshop was designed to introduce students to real-world business careers while strengthening teamwork, creativity, and entrepreneurial thinking. Instead of listening to lectures, students actively engaged with professionals across five core areas of running a business.
Through a guided rotation model, students moved through five professional stations, each focused on a key business function:
- Operations and Customer Experience
- Marketing and Sales
- Finance and Accounting
- Human Resources and Leadership
- Innovation and Strategy
At each station, industry professionals shared insights about their careers, daily responsibilities, and how their roles contribute to business success. Students asked guided questions, took notes, and connected classroom learning to real-world application.
This structure allowed students to explore multiple career paths in a short period of time, helping them see how different roles work together to build and sustain successful businesses.
Understanding the Five Core Areas of Business
A central goal of the workshop was to help students understand how businesses operate as interconnected systems.
Students learned that:
- Operations focus on how a business runs day to day, from scheduling to delivering products or services.
- Marketing and Sales attract and retain customers by telling the company’s story and meeting customer needs.
- Finance manages money, budgets, pricing, and planning for growth.
- Human Resources and Leadership guide people, build teams, and create positive work environments.
- Innovation and Strategy ensure businesses grow, adapt, and remain relevant over time.
By seeing these areas represented by real professionals, students gained clarity on how ideas turn into functioning businesses.
Collaboration and Mentorship in Action
After completing the career rotations, students transitioned into a collaborative group activity where they worked in small teams to design their own business concept.
Guided by mentors, students:
- Chose a product or service idea
- Identified a target audience
- Assigned team roles across the five business areas
- Planned how their business would operate and stand out
This hands-on activity reinforced teamwork, communication, leadership, and creative problem solving. Students applied what they learned from professionals in a fun and practical way, transforming information into action.
Mentorship played a critical role throughout the workshop. Mentors supported students by asking guiding questions, encouraging collaboration, and helping teams think critically about their ideas.
Building Confidence Through Presentation and Feedback
Each student team prepared a short presentation to share their business idea with the professional judges. Every team member participated, building confidence in public speaking and professional communication.
Professionals provided positive feedback and recognized standout ideas for:
- Creativity
- Teamwork
- Leadership
- Real-world potential
Celebrating effort and achievement reinforced the value of participation and growth, not just outcomes.
Recognizing Students and Professionals
Empower Teens United believes recognition matters. At the conclusion of the workshop:
- Students received Certificates of Participation, acknowledging their engagement, creativity, and teamwork.
- Professionals and volunteers were honored with Certificates of Appreciation for their mentorship and support.
These moments help students feel valued and motivated while showing gratitude to the professionals who invest their time in developing the next generation of leaders.
